The National Insurance Institute began an initiative to safeguard 7,000 jade artifacts as well as carvings in other stones and in shell and bone, and this five-story museum—home to both permanent and temporary exhibitions—showcases the world’s largest collection of such treasures. Though most were carved in Costa Rica, some come from other parts of Mesoamerica. The museum also operates a great boutique selling jade reproductions of some of the collection’s signature pieces, among other intriguing items, and an intimate café that’s a good spot for a breather.
