MUSA Museo Subacuático de Arte
Just off of Cancun, as well as the islands of Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox, opportunities to snorkel or scuba dive abound. The waters here are rich with marine life with the four different species of sea turtles here—especially abundant during nesting season, from May to September—a highlight. At MUSA, the Museo Subaquatico de Arte (or Underwater Museum of Art), snorkelers and divers can explore 500 underwater sculptures, all made from materials that encourage the growth of coral. The surprising attraction is more than an interesting art installation, it’s also helping promote the health of the reef.

The itinerary to the Yucatan Peninsula created by Kristen Korey Pike of KK Travels Worldwide includes a day exploring beneath the sea. Check out her trip, and six others designed for AFAR readers, at target=“_blank”>AFAR Journeys.
