Horse Riding in the Mühlviertler Alm
Up north near the Czech border, Mühlviertl is so off the charts that it’s entirely possible you won’t encounter another outsider as you explore its woods, rolling hills, and pastureland. In recent years, hundreds of miles of bridal paths have also sprung up across this granite-based region. Austrians love the cowboy lore of the American West, which may help explain the 50 stables now operating here. Take your pick, and then set out on horseback across meadows and into the kind of mystery-shrouded woods that long ago conjured up folk tales. Intrepid riders can follow unmarked routes, with just a map and compass to guide them. Whatever your skill level, there’s something undeniably cathartic about following the beat of horse hooves and the babble of local streams.
