If you look at old pictures of Mt. St. Helens, it's beautiful. Almost a perfectly conical mountain, it was often compared to Mt. Fuji another composite volcano. And then, in May 1980 - it erupted. I spent two days visiting. There are visitor's centers that offer a history lesson and geographical and environmental information about the area and the blast, The first day, the fog was so thick, I could barely see even 3 feet in front of me. The volcano, far, far in the distance, was out of the question - but I took this photo at the center- two stumps of trees that had been taken out by the blast.
The following day, though, the air had cleared. The sun was shining and the devastation, even 30 years later, was incredible.
