Just below the peak viewing area atop the mountain, Japanese hikers break for lunch in shadows cast by bare trees in midwinter. Nokogiri-yama is one of many places worth exploring in Chiba Prefecture on the Kanto Plain outside Tokyo. We didn't see any other Western travelers this day.
Hikers atop Nokogiriyama in Chiba Prefecture are rewarded with amazing vistas and such artifacts as the Hyakushaku Kannon (Buddhist goddess of mercy) carved into the mountainside and the Nihonji Daibatsu (giant seated Buddha, the largest in Japan). But it's getting there, via the Ropeway cable car, that will take your breath away as you are suspended in midair looking out over Tokyo Bay.
