Mt Elbrus

Mt Elbrus, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, 361616

As the highest point in Europe and one of the Seven Summits of the World, Mt. Elbrus makes it onto most mountaineers’ bucket lists. This long-dormant volcano is situated between the Caspian and Black Seas on the rugged and dramatic Caucus mountain range between Russia and Georgia. Before attempting the peak, climbers get acclimated with hikes through the beautiful glacial valleys. Dig powder? Ski tours are popular in the Barrels Camp area before climbers begin their ascent. There are two summits to experience – Eastern and Western – and you’ll need glacier skills. Plan to overnight in the newer, more comfortable huts between the Barrels Camp and Diesel Hut area.

Climbing the highest peak in Europe

The view of the Elbrus range is magnificent, especially on clear days - Elbrus is the highest peak in Europe at 5,642mt. Few weeks after the expedition, we learnt that this picture can not be taken any longer since the border with neighboring Georgia has been moved (the region is affected by political unrest) and any trek up would be cross-border and illegal
