When you're all monumented out from the wonders of Hampi there's miles of interesting countryside to explore on the other side of the river. Rent a scooter from a guesthouse and you can tout the rural roads and trails to see small villages, banana plantations, rice paddies and a huge reservoir with irrigation canals. I've been to India twice and this rates as one of my favourite experiences.
Slowing down when passing through a village a young man waved me over to the side of the road. Before I knew it he'd hopped on the back of the bike and with some deft sign language indicated he'd like a lift to the next village. No problem, mate - and along the way he showed me a series of caves containing prehistoric cave paintings, including a huge hooded cobra.
