Hike in the Mountains of Mourne
With large sweeping downs, hiking paths, rivers and trails – plus plenty of high peaks for hiking, cycling and rock-climbing challenges, the Mountains of Mourne are one of Northern Ireland’s best-kept secrets.
Slieve Donard is the tallest peak at 850m and climbers will be rewarded with views down over Murlough Bay and Newcastle village, while a gentle hike up Ben Crom will bring you to a lookout over the Silent Valley and Ben Crom Reservoir.
The impressive Mourne Wall, which marked the boundary of land owned by the Belfast Water Commissioners, stretches for 35 miles over 15 mountain summits and the whole area was said to have inspired author CS Lewis for the world of Narnia in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
