Mount Vesuvius
Looming 1,281 meters above the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius is probably the world’s most famous volcano. The last eruption was in 1944, and there is little doubt that it will erupt again threatening the one million people who live on and around its slopes. You can trek up to the crater rim from the parking lot halfway up and peer into the earth’s depths: The views of Naples and the coast are magnificent.
