Mount NeboTourist brochures the world over offer visitors chance to see the promised land, but only Mount Nebo truly delivers. It was at this spot where, according to the book of Deuteronomy, it was here where Moses first saw the Promised Land.
The Moses Memorial Church stands next to a viewpoint that offers a dramatic (and windy) opportunity to see what Moses saw. Information boards point you in the direction of Jericho, Bethlehem and Jerusalem, a hazy 28 miles away, as well as a reminder that you're standing in the center of the Holy Land.
Don't miss the church itself. Though modern, it was built over a 6th century basilica, and has some of the most charming and well-preserved mosaics in the country. The animals in the hunting and herding scenes are a particular delight. The history of the site is excellently described in a small museum below the church.
