Trek Mount Meru
About 70 kilometres to the west of Mount Kilimanjaro lies Mount Meru. A neat triangle of a mountain usually flanked by a blanket of cloud, it’s located within Arusha National Park, a peaceful haven for wildlife including giraffe, leopards and hyena who slink around in the early hours. Treks up this 4562 meter high dormant volcano tend to take three to four days, and it’s a popular aperitif for those planning to hike Kilimanjaro and wanting to acclimatise to the altitude first. All treks begin at Momella gate, and along the way hikers stop overnight at mountain huts while their guides regale trekkers with stories of the wild animal encounters they’ve had in the park during their careers.
