If you’re a Downton Abbey fan, a visit to Mount Edgcumbe House and Gardens should be at the top of your list. The former home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe, this massive historic house is set within a 350-hectare (865-acre) park on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall. The house was originally built in the 1500s but was restored in an 18th-century style. Inside, you’ll find paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds and 16th-century tapestries. Outside, you can stroll through the formal gardens or take a Segway tour. If you’re feeling peckish, order a cucumber sandwich at the Orangery or the Stables cafés or Aunty Em’s Gatehouse, a charming spot for afternoon tea.
