Take an invigorating hike up Mount Cargill for rewarding views of Dunedin and Otago Harbour. The mountain was formed 10 million years ago by volcanic eruptions. According to legend, its three peaks represent the head, body and feet of a Maori princess. Besides panoramic views and lush forest vegetation, you’ll see the famed Organ Pipes, hexagonal basalt columns created by cooled lava. The walk can be steep and requires sturdy footwear.
