Foire aux Santons
When revolutionaries banned the public display of nativity scenes, the people in Provence started making mini crèches for the home, and santons are the small clay figurines they crafted for them. Hand painted and made of clay, a traditional crèche includes 55 characters, from a scissor grinder to a blindman. Santons are collected by families over decades, carefully arranged each year, the baby Jesus added as the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Eve. The Foire aux Santons is a century old tradition, gathering santon makers from across the region to proudly demonstrate their craft and sell their wares. The Foire in Mouans Sartoux, near Grasse, is the oldest and largest on the Riviera.
