A “morro” is the plug of an ancient volcano and there are several found in San Louis Obispo county in California. The most famous is found right off the coast in Morro Bay, California. Morro Bay has several restaurants, a marina, a tiny aquarium and a few hotels right by the water. There is a lot of hiking in the area, as well as a wonderful little nature center called the Morro Bay Nature Center. This is a great place for a picnic - http://www.slostateparks.com/natural_history_museum/ You can walk to Morro rock and see peregrine falcon nests as well as sea otters, sea lions and seals swimming in the waters around the rock. Morro rock is about 581 ft high and is connected to part of the mainland of California. The surrounding landscape is gorgeous and you can easily count the 9 morros or “Nine Sisters”. These are a series of ancient volcanic peaks which form a backdrop for the Cities of San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay on the Central Coast of California.
