In the Noble Cellars

Best known as the home of Brunello, the classic Tuscan winemaking town of Montalcino is also a lovely place to wander around for day, taking in sites like the baroque Church of Saint Bernard and the 16th-century Palazzo Avignonesi. At its heyday, the noblemen who lived in the latter kept their estate’s wine cellars in a nearby area now known as Poliziano, and it’s there—under the brick archways of those former cellars—that you’ll find this ode to the noble grape. The space features an extensive wine shop, stocked with dozens of regional labels, as well as a cozy restaurant and wine bar. Sample interesting vintages by the glass or bottle, and pair them with fresh antipasti platters, homemade pastas (including Tuscan specialties like pici and ravioli with butter and sage), and simply seasoned steaks. Don’t miss the cantucci cookies—perfect for dipping in a sweet wine.
