Fête de Sainte Dévote
Sainte Dévote, patron saint of Monaco and the royal family, is celebrated by the entire country on her saint’s day, January 26. Celebrated since the young saint was martyrized, her body slipped into a boat in Corsica and washed up on the shores of Monaco about 304 CE. She is such a beloved symbol that the first book ever written in Monegasque is “The Legend of Saint Dévote.” The evening begins with a procession along the port, where a small boat arrives. There is then a ceremony in the Church of Saint Devote, where the royal family sets the boat on fire. The next day there is a mass at the Monaco Cathedral, followed by a procession and blessings.
