Sardinia is known for its beaches, and one of them is right in Cagliari. The white sand and palm trees of Poetto are a 15-minute taxi ride from the city's dock (or take bus no. 5 from Piazza Matteotti). It can be busy in August, but is generally quiet at other times of the year and the water stays warm well into autumn. A footpath leads from the beach to Molentargius-Saline Nature Park, the former salt pans and home to diverse plants and wildlife from flocks of flamingoes and pond tortoises to hedgehogs and wild rabbits. Join a guided tour or rent a bike to explore on your own.
