There are two well-known pastry shops within about a block of each other in Boston's historic North End: Mike's Pastry and Modern Pastry. The two are engaged in a constant battle for supremacy, and any good Bostonian has a strong opinion in favor of one or the other.
All the tourists head to Mike's, causing a sidewalk bottleneck and general mayhem in and around the store. This is fine by me, because in my opinion, Modern is by far the superior of the two. Mike's cannolis are the size of a grown man's head, but at Modern Pastry they are delicate, focusing on quality over quantity. You can also choose from a plethora of fillings and extras, plus there are tons of other delicious treats, if ricotta isn't your thing. And the coffee is excellent.
But if you all want to keep going to Mike's, be my guest. It'll keep my line at Modern just a bit shorter.
