Historic Loreto

The most notable of Loreto’s historic sites is the Mission of Our Lady of Loreto, founded in 1697. It marks the start of the Royal Road (Camino Real) that once connected a network of Spanish missions stretching all the way to Sonoma, California. After visiting the mission, stop by the Jesuit Missions Museum next door to see its collection of artifacts from the Spanish colonial period. Consider also taking a side trip to the nearby village of San Javier, where the local mission—one of the oldest in the area—is still a working church.
