Antsirabe located south of Tana, the capital, is known for its handicrafts. One of my favorite workshops is the miniature recycled handicraft shop. Workers make pieces of art out of old or used cans, plastic and metal scraps. They transform these materials into miniature bikes, taxi-brousses, and even pousse pousse. (Pousse Pousse- Antsirabe's rickshaws can be seen on every street brightly painted with red and yellow streaks). The workshops are well worth visiting and allow you to see the skill and creativity of the craftsmen.
Other shops to consider: cloth embroidery, jewelry made from zebu horn, and metal pots.
The demonstrations are usually free yet sometimes you are expected to buy something at the end of the tour.
Ask anyone in town to point you in the direction of the shops.
