Mingei International Museum
The Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park is devoted to folk art from around the world and offers one of San Diego’s most intriguing collections. Depending on when you visit, you might see an exhibition on Indonesian Shadow Puppets, flat puppets made from water buffalo hide, or Pre-Columbian art from the Mingei’s permanent collection including a terracotta dish that dates back to 700—900 A.D. The Mingei’s Collector’s Gallery offers better shopping than the typical museum gift shop because it sells only ethical items from local and international artisans like jewelry, ponchos, and woven baskets. Should you need a caffeine fix during your visit, Café Mingei serves coffee from The WestBean, one of San Diego’s best local roasters.
