One of the Last Sections of the Beijing City Wall
Beijing's city wall lasted for centuries, only recently falling victim to “progress” during the Mao years. A few sections remain, including a portion that runs from Chongwenmen to Dongbianmen. During spring, plum trees blossom under the heavy bricks; and there is a delightful art museum housed within a Ming-era watchtower to wander through. Pair this with a visit to the Ancient Observatory, on an isolated section of the Ming Wall next to Jianguomen Station—here, you can see astronomical instruments dating from the Qing dynasty that were both remarkably accurate and artistically striking.
