Mezlai, which means “the old lock of the door,” provides a key to unlock the flavors of the United Arab Emirates. This richly appointed and luxurious restaurant offers traditional dishes such as hariz served with veal. Hariz is a kind of porridge made with barley and spices, and arguably the national dish of the UAE. You can also get things like eggplant salad, Lebanese couscous with scallops, and spiced lamb liver. It’s hard to save room for dessert, but next time I visit I’m determined to try shebab, a pancake prepared with saffron, date honey, and cream cheese flavored with cinnamon. Wash everything down with some properly prepared karak tea (similar to chai tea).
