Dive Into FunWith the warm waters of the Caribbean lapping the beaches of the Riviera Maya, it’s not surprising that the area offers countless water sports opportunities. Outfitters in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and other towns can get you out on the water on catamarans and wave runners, while bays with gentle surf are ideal for trying something new like paddleboarding or kitesurfing. Reef dive sits can be found on the Mesoamerican Reef which runs along much of the Riviera Maya; inland, cenotes (natural sinkholes that have filled with water) offer deep and cave dives. Even if you aren’t PADI certified, you can still put on a snorkel and mask to see the underwater spectacle.
In the winter, from November to March, bull sharks gather and can be seen on boat excursions departing from Playa del Carmen. In the summer, from May to September, three different species of sea turtles arrive to lay their eggs. There are opportunities to snorkel alongside them, while keeping a respectful distance, and on dry land visitors can join volunteer turtle patrols to safeguard their nests.
