Mesa das Frades
If Lisbon has a soundtrack, it's undoubtedly that of guitarra-driven fado, the melancholic poetic hymns of the downtrodden and sentimental born in 1820s Portugal. Spending a stirring evening wallowing in the delicate sounds of the country's national song is certainly a quintessential Lisbon experience, but tourist-trap fado houses abound in Bairro Alto and Alfama. Keep on walking! At Mesa de Frades, exquisite Portuguese azulejos line the walls in a former 18th Century chapel (currently under renovation), where just a few intimate tables are up for grabs each night. Don’t eve nthink about showing up without a reservation and you probably should make it late one as well - locals go after midnight.
