Mercado dos Lavradores (Funchal's Market)
Founded in the 1940s, the azulejo-tile-lined Mercado dos Lavradores is the best place in town to see, smell and taste what Madeira has to offer. Fresh tropical produce is on display, from anonas (custard apples) and dragon fruit to eight varieties of locally grown passion fruit. There are also vendors of exotic flowers, cheeses, bolo do caco (a flat, circular bread made of sweet potato) and fresh fish, with live tuna-carving.
