Out of all the beautiful places in Costa Rica the capital San Jose seems lacking and I wouldn't recommend wasting many precious travel days there. However I called this city home for three months and as the main travel hub between Costa Rica's diverse areas I suspect many travelers will find themselves in this city for a day. Mercado Artisanal is a smaller out door market that hosts a variety of arts and crafts vendors from Central America--and coffee too! It can be nice for a stroll and to get an idea of souvenir options. I ended up buying a hammock before my months were up, and back in California I remember Costa Rica every time I lay in it. I strongly recommend taking advantage of any hammock time opportunities you find in Costa Rica from the beaches to the jungle, and the mountains to the porch.
