My husband and I spent a summer driving around the former Yugoslavia. Looking for a cheap place to stay after visiting Pula, we decided on the city of Medulin. It is a short drive north-east of Pula and right on the end of Croatia and the sea. We found a quick place for dinner and began our exploratory evening stroll down to the waterfront. Much to our delight, there was a not a single sleepy-harbor sight around. Instead, we were pulled into a wild, light bulb-filled carnival complete with screaming teenagers, cotton candy, Tilt-a-Whirl, and bumper cars. You could buy – as advertised – an American Hot Dog and wash it down with the bottle of whisky you won at the Ring Toss booth. The scene was manic and wonderful, wholly unexpected but magical. Sadly, the giant blow up Chicken and Fish “bouncy palaces” were only for children 5 and under. The only drawback to the place.
