The only meatball-centric restaurant in Kansas City, this lively joint is located on the quaint and quirky West 39th Street District neighboring The University of Kansas Medical Center. The district embodies the casual and hip vibe reminiscent of decades prior—occupied by dive bars, retro vintage shops, bakeries and used bookstores.
As the district itself is very up-and-coming, so is Meatball District. Having just opened January 2016, the place is a fresh and unique option to other restaurants in the area—offering various meatballs, veggie balls, Mac N Cheese balls and the delicious, melt-in-your-mouth fried cheesecake balls (which are slathered with caramel sauce and powdered sugar).
With an awesome happy hour, offering $1 Coors Lights, $2 Sangrias and $3 appetizers (4-7 PM, Monday-Friday), this is the place to be if needing an after-work pick-me-up or somewhere to watch the big game. They also offer specials during Royals baseball games.
My friends and I went during happy hour, ordering an array of appetizers to cater to all our palettes. It’s no surprise that the Mac N Cheese balls are the most popular menu option, as I could eat them everyday and never grow bored. The pizza fries were an interesting and delicious dish, which entailed fries covered in pepperoni, mozzarella and pizza sauce. What more could you want?
We each ordered a different meatball dish, and no one was left disappointed. The pesto is freshly made in the kitchen every day—and it’s the perfect dipping sauce for your meatball (I liked it best with the chicken), and the cheese dipping sauce was also well-fitted.
Meatball District was an exciting and memorable experience—perfect for a group of friends or a casual date. There’s truly no other place like it in Kansas City!
