Finding the 'Kosher Nostra' in Frankfurt

If you are looking for a bit of New York in Manhatten-on-Main, Maxie Eisen is the place. Just minutes from Frankfurt's Main Station lies the way to pastrami happiness, with enormous pastrami-on-rye sandwiches.

Craving a Reuben, or Kreplach? Maxie's got you covered. Or innovate a bit, with herring pickled in beetroot juice, or unique to Frankfurt, Matzoh-ball soup. Drinks range from a selection of beer and wine, to iced tea or cucumber water with mint. Cheeses from Berlin's Fritz Loyd Blomeyer round out a menu that brings New York home to Germany.

Named after notorious Chicago racketeer Maxie Eisen, who was overlord of the city's pushcart peddlers in the 1920s, the restaurant is styled as a 'buvette', or refreshment stall. The popular spot is located on the light-filled corner of Münchenerstrasse and Weser in the Bahnhofquartier.

Maxie Eisen Buvette is open daily except Sundays. The adjacent music bar opens evenings only, with the focus shifting from noshing to clubbing after the restaurant closes.
