The other side of mavericks

Hiking up coastal bluff trails north of Mavericks offers an infrequently captured perspective on the break, which belies its power and force. Appearing almost serene during a lull in the 2012/2013 invitational, a smaller (by Mavericks standards) pulse of swell breaks on the inner shelf and goes ignored by the competitors waiting further out for larger sets. To gain this vantage point, you'll have to locate parking at nearby Fitzgerald Marine Reserve or on residential streets adjacent, and follow sidestreets to trailheads leading south, used primarily by locals for coastal strolls and dog walking. The best time to capture Mavericks breaking from any angle would be during the months of November through March, when large fall and winter swells roll in from the northwest. Check the weather and buoy reports if you're in the area during this time, and mind the crumbling cliff edges!
