Definitely a trip highlight were the trails at Masaya Volcano National Park that let visitors walk throughout the park and in between an enormous, active volcano and craters filled in by jungle foliage. I had never been so close to a live, active volcano before, and even though it has only had two major hot lava flows, the constant emission of large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas makes you think it will erupt any any time.
This was actually Nicaragua's first National Park in 1979 with two volcanoes and five craters. The volcanoes are a dry, desert setting, and the craters are a lush, jungle environment where centuries-old greenery has set in.
Definitely shows off the ecological diversity of volcanoes in Nicaragua. Very easy to get to if doing a day trip from Managua. Awesome walk, amazing views, stellar photos and cool educational museum.
