Mariposa Gallery Flies Away with Imaginative Creations
This Nob Hill gallery's tag line—curiouser and curiouser since 1974—is well earned in all respects. The contemporary craft gallery is one of the oldest in the country, and it's home to one-of-a-kind finds. Mariposa spotlights local artists, including Marcia Sedneck, who fashions whimsical dress sculptures from vintage cookie tins, cheese graters, and screen doors (whose work is pictured here). Photographs of post-World War II Japanese toys by Cate Goedert adorns the walls and jewelry—both playful and elegant—fills glass cases that wrap around a center island. Pulling from its stable of artists and outsiders, the gallery features monthly exhibits downstairs and in its upstairs annex.
