Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Marine WondersPerhaps the single biggest draw that lures travelers to Cozumel is its world-class diving. The waters here are crystal-clear and the abundant marine life includes turtles, sharks, eels, and tropical fish including parrot fish and the endemic, and spectacular, toadfish. You’ll find them living along some 30 reefs that vary in depth from 15 to 90 feet. The underwater seascapes are as dazzling as the animals that inhabit them, with caves, cliffs, and black coral forests waiting to be explored. If you are a certified diver, or looking to become a certified one, few destinations can compete with Cozumel.
For everyone else, there is a long list of other water sports to take part in. Anyone can don a mask and snorkel to some of the same colorful display that awaits divers. Or try something new—perhaps stand-up paddleboarding, kitesurfing, or parasailing. Get an adrenaline rush chopping along the waves windsurfing, or opt for the more meditative sport of fly-fishing.
