Sarasota is perhaps best known for its beaches, particularly the Siesta Keys, but the Marie Selby Botanical Garden is just as impressive.
The gardens span 14 acres in which thousands of exotic plants thrive. A large majority of these plants were collected from scientific expeditions through tropical rain forests. There are also 12 buildings and seven greenhouses located on the botanical garden grounds. Many visitors come to marvel at the collection of more than 6,000 orchids.
I went on a relatively quiet day and was able to see most of the attractions in less than two hours. The gardens are extremely scenic and there are several benches scattered throughout where visitors can sit under the cool shade of the trees.
Admission is a bit steep, at $17 for adults but if you are a an outdoors type of traveler, I highly recommend fitting this into your Sarasota trip.
