Maredsous Abbey

The Benedictines in Belgium
Although lovers of beer will know the name Maredsous because of their delicious drink, the abbey was built by Benedictine monks to worship god and not to eat cheese and drink beer.

You can visit the abbey however and do just that, before or after you have a tour.

The place is kid friendly too, with a playground to keep them busy while mom and pop enjoy the finer things in life.

Unfortunately beer is no longer brewed there but up in the north of the country.

Maredsous windows
To be honest, as Catholic churches and cathedrals go, this one isn't overly impressive on the inside. There just isn't much in there; nothing like you would find in one of the Gothic churches.

To me, the highlights were the very impressive stained glass windows.
