No scenes in Wim Wenders 1984 film Paris, Texas were shot in the real Paris, Texas, but it did film in areas around the state, from Port Arthur to Marathon, a small and charming town north of Big Bend National Park. In the movie, Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) and Walt (Dean Stockwell) stay at the Marathon Motel and RV Park on West Highway 90. The motel was on a decline when it was used in the film, and was later bought by a local couple as a "fixer-upper." They consequently fixed it up so well it's not really recognizable from the film, but it's still a nice place to stay and take advantage of the area's famous "dark skies," which are so inky that millions of stars can be seen at night—and we're not talking the Hollywood kind.
