To get this kind of picture, the best way to do is to take Staten Island ferry from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island. the best part is, it is FREE :) Whenever my friends visit me or when I am feeling blue, I always go there, just to see the Statue of Liberty, our beacon of hope.
I took three Bay Area teenagers to NYC for ten days. Each morning we parted ways after a bagel or spinach souffle and coffee from Heidi's House in the Lower East Village, meeting up again in the early eve at ápizz for a cheap eats. While the kids wandered the streets of NYC, I did the same. Walking for 8 hours a day, I got a great workout and was inspired by the architecture and street art, beyond my expectations. The kids swore they saw Patti Smith who gave them a sympathetic smile when they told her they were thrown out of the Chelsea Hotel lobby for no good reason. We all wandered the city without a plan, took hundreds of photos and can't wait to visit again.
Take the 7 train heading Flushing Queens, and stop at Vernon-Jackson station. Head to East River which is a short 10 minute walk and you'll see the beautiful skyline of midtown Manhattan from Long Island City in Queens.
