Mandalay

The last royal capital of Burma (it was built in 1857–59 by King Mindon), Mandalay is considered by many to be the country's cultural capital. There are many important temples and monasteries here, as well as the famous Mandalay Palace. A wealth of historical sites are on its doorstep, including the crumbling remains of the former royal capitals of Amarapura, Inwa (Ava) and Sagaing.
