There is a monk, we were told, who lives in a cave monastery high above the remote village of Manang in the Anapurna range of Nepal. It turns out they were right. He was 96 years old and claimed to have remained in the cave for the last 43 years. The view of four of the world's tallest mountains outside his cave was stunning. For a mere 100 rupees (a little more than a dollar) this venerable monk gave us his blessing along with a little bead necklace. The price, and the effort of the 2000 foot climb up from the exotic mountain town of Manang, was well worth it as we were able to sit in contented silence with this man for a time in one of the most stunning settings on the planet, experiencing a way of life that is gradually disappearing.
