If you’ve read anything about Portland
, you’ve probably heard about the blocks of street food carts in downtown Portland, most notably at the corner of SW 9th Ave. & SW Alder St. Do not – I repeat – DO NOT go to Portland and fail to eat at Mai’ Pho. I promise that you will thank me for this recommendation. The polite Vietnamese woman inside the trailer cheerfully packed 2 big bowls of chicken pho to go for me and my husband and sent us on our way. What ensued when we sat down to eat was a feeding frenzy full of slurps and moans as the rich, warm broth of our pho dribbled messily down our chins. The spice from the jalapeños opened our sinuses, causing our noses to run. We sat in the front seats of our car with napkins tucked into our shirts like bibs, sucking up noodles, and making obscene sounds. It was downright pornographic. I’ve eaten my fair share of pho – albeit never in Vietnam – but this is the best pho I’ve ever had. Ever!
