A few weeks ago, I went to the beautiful Magnolia Park that sits within the area of Xi Shan, the West Mountain that rises up along Dianchi Lake to the south Kunming. As spring takes over Yunnan it's impossible to miss the delicate blossom that lines every street and alley. At this time of the year the Magnolia Park is at it's best with every tree taking part in this magnificent spring celebration.
It’s fairly easy to get to Xi Shan. You can take bus 54 from Xiao Xi Men and then once you arrive at the end of the line switch to bus 6, which drops you off at the bottom of the mountain. From here you need to make your way through the bustle of people trying to get you to take their vans and walk to your left, with the city behind you. Walk past the wood cabins and you will hit the start of the road. At this point you can walk along the quiet leafy road that winds uphill. It takes about half an hour to get to the Magnolia Park, you will see it sign posted. There is a 3 kuai entrance fee.
This is the perfect time to visit as all the trees are in bloom. There is a big stretch of rolling grass (you can actually sit on it, a rarity in Kunming!) and you can spend a lazy day there picnicking. The air is fresh, you can smell the pine needles and it gives you a fantastic break from the dusty city.
