Traveling east from the Pacific, the Cockburn Channel ends where the Magdalena Channel begins, and then the route takes a 90-degree turn north toward the Magellan Strait. The two channels are part of a navigation network that ultimately leads to the Beagle Channel, which runs along the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. Looming above the Magdalena Channel is the mist-shrouded Monte Sarmiento, described by the naturalist Charles Darwin as "the most sublime spectacle in Tierra del Fuego."
