St. George Sheltering the Madaba Map
The current Greek Orthodox church of St. George located in the heart of Madaba, Jordan, isn't a very old church, relatively speaking for the area it's situated in. What makes St. George a unique destination beyond the simple beauty of its intimate interior is that it gives shelter to one of the ancient worlds oldest surviving mosaic floor maps of the Holy Land and Jerusalem. Dating to the 6th century AD the floor map is centrally located in the church's apse and roped off from being tread upon by its worshippers and tourists alike. Recently restored, the Madaba Map is quite a large and extensive map, and remains mostly intact.
