Mackintosh House and The Hunterian Art GalleryAfter the horrific fire that gutted the Glasgow School of Art in 2018, the Mackintosh House—located on the University of Glasgow’s campus—is the best place to see designs by the great architect and his wife, Margaret Macdonald. Here, visitors will find a meticulous reconstruction of the couple’s Glasgow home, complete with the original fixtures and furniture as well as virtually the same views and natural light effects (their actual house was just down the road).
Appropriately, the Mackintosh House occupies the same building as The Hunterian art gallery, which boasts one of the most distinguished public art collections in Scotland. Holdings range from Rubens and Rembrandt to the Scottish Colourists and the Glasgow Boys, plus the largest permanent display of work by James McNeill Whistler. There’s also an outdoor sculpture garden with a small collection of modern works by British artists.
