Mackintosh at the WillowAn important piece of Glasgow’s architectural and cultural heritage, Mackintosh at the Willow occupies the same building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for local entrepreneur and patron Catherine Cranston. It was here that Miss Cranston opened her iconic tearoom in 1903, serving Glasgow’s elite amid high-backed ladder chairs, stained glass windows, and other accoutrements of Mackintosh’s art nouveau style. The building changed ownership several times over the years and fell into disrepair until the Willow Tea Rooms Trust bought it in 2014 and set about an extensive restoration.
Today, Mackintosh at the Willow features a 200-seat restaurant, the famous Salon de Luxe, a gallery, and a billiard room. Stop by for a filling breakfast or light lunch, or for the delicious afternoon tea, served from noon to 4:30 p.m., when you can pair finger sandwiches, scones, and pots of loose-leaf tea with champagne, whisky, or gin.

Tea with Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Architects and designers, students of the pursuit or just anyone with an eye for great design: the name Charles Rennie Mackintosh probably is held in high esteem in your world. The Glasgow architect and designer is celebrated around the world as one of the great creative minds. Glasgow has several Mackintosh designs, but The Willow Team Rooms is the spot where you can enjoy a meal, a cup of tea or the full-on Afternoon Tea experience. Mackintosh designed The Willow Tea Rooms in 1904. If you go, make sure you make a reservation ahead of time and ask for the Room de Luxe, pictured here. Everything in the upstairs room -- from the cutlery, chairs and light fixtures to the servers outfits -- were designed by Mackintosh. There is another Willow Tea Room also designed by Mackintosh, but this is the spot to go. Even if you don't do tea and cucumber sandwiches, if you appreciate good design and fancy a light meal at the same time, you can't go wrong with The Willow Tea Rooms.
