Boabab Lodge, a private, self-catering house in the Mabalingwe Nature Reserve is a fantastic option to get out of Johannesburg or Pretoria within a two-hour drive.
Sleeping 12, the house is well equipped with a splash pool to cool down in high bushveld temperatures. But the biggest feature is the magnificent view: One-hundred-and-eighty-degrees over lush bush from a mountainside location. It is impossible not to spot a giraffe, impala, warthog or kudu at any given time.
Beds are comfy, furniture a little worn, but it is after all the 'bush' and if you have to 'rough' it a bit, this is the way. We used it for a mini family reunion and everyone loved it.
Malbalingwe Nature Reserve overflows with wild life. There is even an option to feed the lions! Well maintained roads allow for sunrise and sunset drives in your own vehicle or with a warden in a open Jeep. The flora is as abundant as the fauna - with trees, grass and several lakes. An easy 90 minute drive from Pretoria and 20 minutes outside of the large town of Bela Bela, this game park is well worth an overnight or extended stay with a number of lodging options. Try to visit 'out of season', as the park can get pretty busy during school and public holidays.
