LUX* North Male Atoll

Why we love it: Modern villas with rooftop decks subvert the thatched roof hut typical of the Maldives.

The Highlights:
- Multi-story residences with private pools in various configurations
- Translucent overwater spa
- Private lagoon for swimming and snorkeling around the house reef

The Review:
The second property in the Maldives from LUX* Resorts & Hotels, this one is on the six-hectacre Olhahali island, a 1-hour boat ride or 15-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport. Bucking the trend of thatched roof overwater bungalows, LUX* opted for a more modern South Beach style of architecture for its 67 villas. While the number of bedrooms vary, each one is two or three levels, has a private pool, and features a rooftop deck—a first for the Maldives. Most luxurious are the LUX* Retreats, which can sleep up to eight guests across three stories. It includes 24-hour butler service, in-villa spa treatments, unlimited laundry service, and a personal fitness area, sauna, and hammam. Oh, and if you’re in the LUX* Overwater Retreat, bring the yacht! You can dock it right at your villa.

Resort amenities include seven bars and restaurants from an ice cream shop to a private dining experience with everything in between, a spa with five over-water treatment rooms, art studio, tennis courts, fitness center, beach volleyball, outdoor cinema, kids club, and more than enough water sports activities. Non-motor watercraft like paddleboards, canoes, and windsurfing equipment are complimentary plus it’s easy to snorkel around the house coral reef, just a few minutes off the shore. Excursions include diving, kite surfing, waterskiing, parasailing, Seabob, flyboarding, fishing, and turtle and dolphin quests—truly something for everyone.
