This town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, has a long history of seafaring. The village proudly maintains itself as a pristine example of an early British colonial settlement, but it's enlivened by charming gift shops and cafés. Lunenburg flourished under the cod-fishing industry, and its colorful wooden houses—which date to the 18th century—are evidence of its history of wealth; some feature the distinctive five-sided dormer called the “Lunenburg Bump.”
